A-Z Challenge: N

So much sorrow over yesterday in Boston. It's awful to think that people think this sort of violence is a good idea in anyway. My prayers are with all the families and workers who are there.

I thought and thought and I picked movies that are good against evil. Movies with fight and power, where humanity takes center stage-ish :)

Night Watch

Anton finds himself to be an Other. A vampire, really. The Others are divided into two groups the Light and the Dark. Anton fights on the side of Light. He main mission is to save a young boy wanted by the Dark Others for sacrifice.
There are many characters, it's very dark, it can be hard to follow at times. But, it is one of the best vampire movies. No glitter here folks.
Konstantin Khabenskiy, Vladimir Menshov, Galina Tyunina

Vampiress Larisa, initiate: I want to live.
Anton Gorodetsky: So live. Live. Who's stopping you?
Vampiress Larisa, initiate: I want to be human again.
Anton Gorodetsky: You want to be human? Then act like a human.

Night of the Hunter

I saw this for the first time two years ago and it still freaks me out.  (It made that whole Nathan Fillion/Buffy bit make a lot more sense :) This movie is all about good and evil. And evil parading as good. It is one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen.
A religious fanatic murder sets out to get money hidden by a fellow criminal. He marries the man's widow in order to get the location of the money from the children.
Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish, James Gleason

Rev. Harry Powell: [when he notices John staring at the words "love" and "hate" tattooed across his knuckles] Ah, little lad, you're staring at my fingers. Would you like me to tell you the little story of right-hand/left-hand? The story of good and evil? H-A-T-E! It was with this left hand that old brother Cain struck the blow that laid his brother low. L-O-V-E! You see these fingers, dear hearts? These fingers has veins that run straight to the soul of man. The right hand, friends, the hand of love. Now watch, and I'll show you the story of life. Those fingers, dear hearts, is always a-warring and a-tugging, one agin t'other. Now watch 'em! Old brother left hand, left hand he's a fighting, and it looks like love's a goner. But wait a minute! Hot dog, love's a winning! Yessirree! It's love that's won, and old left hand hate is down for the count!

Night of the Comet

An 80's zombie movie. I have a soft spot for this one since this was my first zombie movie. :) Oh those days, young and innocent :) I thought those were what zombies were. Silly me:)
The Earth is caught in the tail end of a comet. The next morning those that saw it are now dust. Others have turned to zombie-like creatures who will eventually turn to dust. Then there are a few who didn't see or were exposed to the comet's tail at all. A merry band of survivors.
Catherine Mary Stewart, Robert beltran, Kelli, maroney

Samantha: [calling across the street to the others after Regina pushes the crosswalk button] What are you waiting for?
Hector Gomez: We're waiting for the light to change.
Regina Belmont: We DO NOT cross against the light!
Samantha: [looks at the red crosswalk light] Are you nuts, auntie Regina?
Regina Belmont: [sighs] You may as well face the facts Samantha. The whole burden of civilization has fallen upon us.
Samantha: What's that supposed to mean?
Regina Belmont: It MEANS we do not cross against the light!

  1. Night of the Hunter is one of my favorite movies and my favorite Mitchum movie. Night Watch sounds interesting. I'll check it out.

  2. Mitchum was just fantastic. I am glad I saw this after having seen his other movies. It would have been hard to get that evil character out of my head when watching him do other roles.
